Usually, any news in the reggae world involving Protoje piques my interest, so I when I saw a tweet from Reggaeville.com with his name in it, I had to check it out. The first thing that sticks out about this track is that it’s not really reggae. Having said that, I still think the track works pretty well, and Protoje has a sick verse right in the middle.
I did a little digging, and it turns out that it’s a mash up, but I don’t know exactly where the Protoje or Gappy Ranks vocals came from. It’s going to bother me that I don’t remember or I don’t know, so I’m going to have to figure this out! The instrumental part of the track is from a song called “Stay Up” by Graves & Deuxces that I’ve linked below:
It seems like an unlikely combination, but they work surprisingly well together. Also, considering Protoje’s recent forays in the UK music scene, it actually wouldn’t surprise me if this was a real track he released. My hat’s off to Mr.Swingback for his skill in fusing this great instrumental with a little Jamaican style.
