L’Entourloop – Dreader Than Dread

Happy Saturday morning everyone!  I found a real GEM of a song yesterday, that also has a cool video that is very unique.  I have never heard of L’Entourloop before, and I haven’t been able to find out much about them through Google either.  Unsurprisingly, most of the pages that make mention of them are French websites, but even using Google to translate the few pages I found did not yield a substantial amount of information.  I do love a challenge though, so I will definitely be devoting some time to learning more about them.

At first, it seemed like the video was just taken using some filter that was made to make the footage look older than it was.  However, at around the 30 second mark, the camera zooms into a scene that turns out to be Lee “Scratch” Perry at the controls of the Black Ark.  This is real footage from the 70s, so now I’m doubting whether what I saw in the first 30 seconds was old or new.  Very, very cool effect and I was already hooked before the song really even started.  Fans of Perry know that he was a very animated producer when he was working in the studio, and most have probably seen this footage before.  Rather than just relying on vintage footage for the cool factor though, they introduce what appears to be a paper cut out of Perry grooving to the beat in the studio around the one minute mark.  I don’t know why, but this brought a huge smile to my face.  I loved seeing the creative manipulation of these older images, and in a way, watching what was old become new again.  I think even Perry himself would approve.  Anyway, this technique is used in other places in the video, and I think it is absolutely great.  The song itself is a lot of fun as well and is very upbeat.  I’m pretty sure the chorus of the song is a sample from an old Studio One track, but I can’t place my finger on it.  If anyone knows what it is, please let me know!

Hi Antonio…no, i never did find it! Thank you so much for the info! The funny thing about the timing of your comment is that I had never heard of Ronnie Davis before, but a couple weeks ago I stumbled upon a song of his called “I Won’t Cry” and fell in love with it…have started looking through his catalog and recognize some of the songs, just never knew his name. The one you just identified is going straight into my playlist! Blessings!
