Chainska Brassika – Knowledge is King

There is a real resurgence of ska (and reggae) happening in the U.K. right now.  Specifically, what’s being dubbed as the “South East London” sound seems to be exploding recently with new bands and new music.  I can’t help but wonder if this could represent a “fourth wave” of ska.  For those who are unfamiliar with it, ska originated in Jamaica in the late 50’s/early 60’s, and is considered the precursor of rocksteady and reggae.  It caught on in the U.K. in the 70’s with bands like The Specials, and the The English Beat.  Then it crossed back over the Atlantic to North America in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  While it never died, the ska scene seemed to have become dormant.  However, we could now be witnessing it’s re-awakening.

This new track is from a band called Chainska Brassika, and it happens to be accompanied by some trippy visuals:

While reading a little more about this band, I learned that it actually shares some members with another band called FatLion Hi-Fi, which I highlighted in a previous TickuTalk post here.  It’s great to see this kind of collaboration and co-operation between musicians, which I think is the sign of a healthy musical movement.  I also learned that Chainska Brassika were the most recent winners of the World Reggae Contest which takes place annually in Ostoda, Poland.  As winners of the contest, they will get to spend 5 days recording at the legendary Harry J Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.  Below is some footage from the festival:

Looks like it was a fun festival, and I will definitely be adding some more Chainska Brassika to my playlist!
